Tips to Help You Become More Physically Active

Physical activity can reduce the risk of falls and maintain your mental health. It also provides an opportunity to make new friends and interact with people from many social groups.

Here are some tips to help YOU become more physically active:

  • Explore classes or group activities available in your community. Choose the activities that interest you most and give it a try.
  • Ask a friend or family member to get active with you. You can motivate each other and achieve your goals together.
  • Be realistic when you set goals for your current health condition. Healthy older adults should be active most days of the week. Start slow and gradually work up to at least 150 minutes of moderate- to vigorous- intensity aerobic physical activity per week. You can do your activities in 10 minute segments or more.

Remember, check with your healthcare provider before starting an exercise program if you have not been active recently.
