Quit Tips
Want to make quitting smoking that much easier? Try integrating even just one of these tips...
- List your reasons to quit and review them often.
- Think about your past quit attempts. What worked and what did not?
- Keep a record of when, where and why you smoke.
- Identify your triggers and stressors and learn ways to cope with them.
- Build support. Tell a supportive family member or friend that you are quitting and ask for their help.
- Set a quit date within a month.
- Consider stop-smoking medication (nicotine gum, lozenge, patch, inhaler and/or Zyban or Champix) and discuss with your doctor.
- Plan your activities for your first smoke-free week. As well, try to include a variety of fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products in your diet.
- Deal with cravings: keep busy, drink water, take slow deep breaths, be physically active and get plenty of rest.
- Reward yourself. Be positive! If you slip, learn from it and keep trying.
